Широкодиапазонный радиоприемник ICOM IC-R8500 производился с 1996 по 2004 год. Приемник имеет несколько модификаций для разных стран, отличающихся в основном диапазоном принимаемых частот.
Это гетеродин с тройным преобразованием частоты и PLL синтезатором частот. В радиоприемнике есть сдвиг промежуточной частоты (IF shift) и режекторный фильтр (APF). Также есть подавитель импульсных помех (NB), аттенюатор, переключаемая АРУ и цифровая АПЧ. Чувствительность приемника в диапазоне от 2 до 1300 МГц практически не зависит от частоты. Стабильность частоты обеспечивается кварцевым генератором с термокомпенсацией. Клавиатура позволяет производить прямой ввод частоты.
В каждой ячейке памяти запоминается частота, вид модуляции, полоса пропускания, шаг настройки и др. Для повышения эффективности использования памяти ячейки разделены на 20 банков по 40 ячеек и на области автоматической записи или пропуска по 100 ячеек каждая. Банкам памяти можно присваивать буквенные имена длиной до 8 символов, а ячейкам до 5 соответственно. Дополнительно в памяти выделено 20 ячеек для границ сканирования и 4 приоритетных частоты.
Для управления компьютером используется последовательный интерфейс RS-232, а для обмена данными интерфейс CI-V.
